The African Gender Institute (AGI) at the University of Cape Town warmly welcomes you to the revamped Gender and Women’s Studies (GWS) website. Taking into account the kinds of opportunities and challenges faced by feminists located in African universities, we offer a range of African-authored and African-centred material that takes gender seriously. Nearly seven years after the first regional workshop on the project, it is our hope that the thinking that anchored the discussions then is encapsulated in this new-look website. At the moment, all the material is in English but we hope to include French, Swahili and Portuguese materials as soon as we can. In order to succeed in this endeavour, we would like YOU to send us your comments, views, links or other material you deem deserving of serving Africa’s emancipation and hence help create an intellectual base for our - your - Africa and its future generations.
After navigating the GWS website, we hope you will think…
The spark…
This website is the spark that ignites my imagination to possibilities of teaching GWS on the continent.
Locally available resources…
This website explores the possibilities of using in teaching GWS locally produced and available knowledges that many organisations have been creating through their work with the communities.
Virtual togetherness…
This website inspires and strengthens the spirit of togetherness so that the endeavour of teaching Gender and Women’s Studies in Africa is not so lonely.
