Feminist Knowledge | Bibliography: African Women's Studies II
Following the concentration of studies on African women's subjection to oppressive male sexuality in the eighties and early nineties, many recent studies deal more holistically with women's sexuality and reproductive rights. Overall, however, studies of African women and sexuality dwell on overtly developmentalist and practical issues, rather than on women's psychic health or sexual choices and desires.
A
burgeoning and eclectic tradition has developed around women and AIDS. This
work has been ideologically, politically and intellectually uneven. Many studies
originate outside of Africa and have been coordinated by institutions like the
UN and the World Bank. Other work, undertaken by local research networks and
NGOs, or by scholars collaborating with these, includes perceptive studies of
grassroots and community initiatives.
