African Women’s Studies: 1996 – 2001

Bibliographies

African feminist scholarship has undergone enormous development since the mid-nineties. Within Africa, organisations and research institutes including the regional Akina Mama wa Afrika (AmwA), the African Women's Leadership Institute, Femmes Africa Solidarite, ABANTU for Development, the Council for the Economic Empowerment of Women in Africa (CEEWA), Women in Law and Development in Africa (WILDAF), and national ones like the Zimbabwe Women's Resource Centre and Network (ZWRCN), the Tanzanian Media Women's Association (TAMWA) many Ugandan organisations, including Law and Advocacy for Women in Uganda (LAW-U), the Uganda Media Women's Association and the umbrella National Association of Women’s Organisations in Uganda (NAWOU), and in Botswana, the Emang Basadi Women's Association, have increased the variety and quantity of feminist scholarship in unprecedented ways. A growing number and range of works focus on the myriad challenges facing feminism on the continent.

Developments beyond Africa have also had a major impact both on feminist scholar-

ship within Africa and on scholarship about the continent produced elsewhere. The Beijing Conference in 1995 created platforms for consolidating programmes of action for feminists worldwide through specific projects in different regions. Dialogue and networks established through the conference were to have a lasting impact on intellectual traditions in feminist activism and scholarship towards the close of the century and have significant strengthened initiatives in Africa. Other international conferences, such as the Women in Africa and the African Diaspora, first held in Nigeria in 1992 and subsequently in 1998 and 2001, have also fuelled collaborative feminist scholarship and created important avenues of collaboration and networking for enriching the work of feminists in and beyond Africa.
