Feminist Knowledge | Bibliography: African Women's Studies I
The period between 1980 and 1995 was an important consolidating one for African feminist scholarship. Adopting the frameworks of “womanism", “African feminism", “critical third world feminism", “black feminism" and “postcolonial feminism", feminist scholars and activists on the continent increasingly defined their commitment to African cultural and intellectual agendas and focused systematically on the nexus of gender, imperialism and race. The attention to this intersection from the mid-eighties is not unique to African feminists. But the emphasis on this intersection, currently well-established in western feminist scholarship, has rung with a special urgency for those whose lives have been insistently structured by it.
In addition
to the rise of a vibrant and self-conscious theoretical tradition, scholarly
work on women and gender, produced both within Africa and abroad, improved enormously
in quantity and scope. While previous studies had been anthropological and largely
apolitical, by the eighties the global impact of the women's movement had galvanised
concern with politically critical studies of African gender relations and identities.
By the mid-nineties, Amina Mama (1996) was able to map major intellectual developments
and trajectories in the existing scholarship. The year 1995 is therefore used
as a cut-off point for defining an important consolidating moment for women’s
and gender studies in Africa.
